Africa to become 3rd largest oil producer by 2011

Citizens of Nigeria's have been fighting international oil companies for generations in attempts to get their farm lands cleaned up. We have seen a recent bought of oil discoveries on other African nations, whether they will forge a different path from Nigeria or fall victim to the resource curse remains to be seen.

Text messaging gives a voice to the voiceless in Mozambique

"These were the anonymous text messages received by Mozambicans just prior to the recent unrest (in which 13 people died) in the country related to the high cost of living. The message, and the ensuing unrest, shows the new organisational power cell phones have brought to the poor in a country where 65% of the population lives in poverty but exercises little political clout.

South Africa becomes a net importer of processed foods

"The South African agricultural sector has been witnessing a drop in employment related to the importation of processed foods. Lindie Stroebel, Economic Intelligence Managed [sic] at the Agricultural Business Chamber said that historically SA was a net exporter of primary agricultural products, but since 2006 it has become a net importer of processed products. The Agricultural Business Chamber, in its agribusiness confidence index, listed a lack of skills and professional workers as one of the main factors inhibiting the sector's competitiveness.

Is game farming and hunting in Africa's sustainable future?

"There is now also a growing appreciation of the benefits of game farming as opposed to traditional livestock farming. Indigenous game farming promises to be more sustainable, having multiple benefits such as (this is by no means exhaustive):
-requiring less infrastructure;
-consuming less water;
-animals are easier to breed and maintain;
-animals are more resilient to environmental factors so production costs are lower;
-impacts on the land are smaller;
-less fatty meat means better health prospects for consumers; and

COMACO, making markets and conservation work together

Some wildlife conservationists are now being criticized for not acknowledging the cost-benefit analysis for local communities. When asking a local community to stop all game hunting, you risk undermining their economy and create potential for poaching if you do not provide an alternative source of income. This is exactly what has been happening throughout Africa ever since traditional hunting practices were outlawed.

Africa's newly educated class

On Sept. 6th, 2010 the first African Student Leadership Summit took place at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.

Many Africa Colonizers made a point of keeping the local population under-educated to ensure docility. As a result, when African countries gained their independence they were left with a political and economic framework designed by the West, and few citizens who had the experience or education to manage their newly inherited country.

About 50 years after most countries gained their independence the first African Student Leadership Summit took place.
