United Nations University launches a short-term scholarship program in biotechnology in LATNAM

“The Biotechnology Program of the United Nations University (UNU) has called for applications to its short-term scholarship program and several academic initiatives for 2011. The application process is from June 1st to September 30th. The program includes: (i) climate change and biotechnology, (ii) control of vectors and biotechnology; (iii) biotechnology in human health; (iv) industrial biotechnology, agricultural biotechnology, and biotechnology applied to art conservation; and (v) copyright and technology transfers in biotechnology.

Nigeria creating the legal framework for agricultural biotechnology

Nigeria is creating the framework to be a regional leader in producing modified cotton, and other agricultural biotechnology products.
“Federal lawmakers conclude work on a bill on biosafety law, as part of efforts to create a legal framework to ensure safe practice of biotechnology in agriculture. The bill has been passed at the House and the representatives are now waiting for the Senate to pass a similar one to have a harmonized copy of the bill.”

Indian R&D positioned to innovate second hand

The Strategic Foresight Group writes,

"Research & Development of emerging technologies in India is expected to be focused on cost reduction through process innovation of products and technologies developed elsewhere in the world. The prospects of original inventions appear dismal, despite 2010– 2020 having been declared as the ‘Decade of Innovation’ by the Indian Government." Compared to China, India files a paltry handful of patent applications.
